Welcome Bonus Explained: Deposit Match, Free Bets and Wagering

A welcome bonus is an offer for new players after sign-up or a first deposit. In sports betting it often takes the form of a free bet or a deposit match with a minimum-odds condition; in the casino, a percentage match with wagering. This page explains how to read and calculate a welcome offer. We do not publish figures for specific offers.

Three common forms

Worked example: a sports deposit match

Deposit €50, bonus €50, wager the bonus five times on bets at 1.50 or higher. Turnover is €250. At an average margin of 5% the expected loss while clearing is €12.50, so the bonus is worth roughly €37.50 in theory. If the deposit and bonus both had to be wagered, turnover would rise to €500 and the expected loss to €25.

The minimum odds matter more than they look. At 1.50 or higher you cannot clear the bonus with safe short-priced picks, so variance rises. A €50 bonus needs several bets — and if the first ones lose, you may lose the whole balance before the terms are met.

Worked example: a free bet

A €10 free bet at odds of 3.00 returns €20 if it wins — the profit, without the original €10. A free bet is therefore worth less than its face value. At higher odds the ratio improves; at short odds you lose most of the value. Some free bets have minimum odds or cannot be used in accumulators — read the terms.

What to check before accepting

TermWhy it matters
Wagering multiplesets the turnover and the expected loss
What is wageredbonus only, or deposit plus bonus
Minimum oddsrules out cheap picks and increases variance
Time limita short window forces you to play fast and a lot
Maximum betgoing over it can void the bonus
Maximum cashoutcaps how much of the bonus you can ever withdraw

When to skip it

If you bet occasionally and in small amounts, a welcome bonus can push you to play more and faster than planned. If you want to withdraw after your first winning bet, a bonus may block that. A welcome bonus mainly suits players who would bet a similar volume anyway.

Wagering is covered in depth on the wagering requirements page; all bonus types are in Bonuses.

The actual offer and its terms are set by the operator the button leads to — it is chosen by the affiliate network and may not be Tipsport. What counts is what the operator's terms say at the moment you accept a bonus.

FAQ

Is a welcome bonus free money?
Not quite. Wagering means turnover on which you pay the margin, so the real value is lower than the face amount.
Can I withdraw my deposit while a bonus is active?
It depends on the terms. If the deposit is locked too, withdrawing before wagering is complete can void the bonus.
What is a free bet?
A bet without your own stake. If it wins you receive the profit, not the free-bet value.
Do I need a promo code on registration?
Some offers need one and some activate automatically. The operator's terms say which applies.
